What if Mohamed Morsi, the deposed president of Egypt, was smart, in possession of key statesman skills and competencies and thus managed to stay in power through his first term?
Well friends, good question. Egypt would have had no future to speak of, forget about development and progress, forget about a modern educational system, forget about women's and minorities' rights, forget about varied industries, businesses and services emerging and thriving, forget about a nation where people's welfare, and the emphasis on science and technology is the norm, and so on. Basically, forget about Egypt ever having the chance to be in the 21st century, having to settle for the 14th century or thereabout.
If Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood had managed to stay in power, their culture would have been the predominant one, burying the hoped-for culture for hundreds of years to come; there would have been no opposition left; there would have been no further elections - or if there were, the results would have been an exact replica of those during the Gamal Abel-Nasser/Anwar Sadat/Hosni Mubarak eras, 90%+ in favor of the incumbent, with no particular human running in opposition.
Going back to a military-dominated regime, with a "representative" dictator in control, would be a colossal error, one that would deny Egyptians the noble and lofty goals they aspired to when they launched their revolution of January 25, 2011 and confirmed with their second two years later on June 30, 2013. We all know what those goals were. They included freedom of expression, freedom of religion, social justice, opportunities to compete for and build the country's wealth, the right to assemble peaceably and to petition the government for a redress of grievances....and more.
Now, obviously I am being a bit sardonic here, but it is becoming abundantly evident that multiculturalism and Islamic extremism do not mix. This presents Egypt with a historic dilemma. The nation may be facing an almost insurmountable obstacle to progress, to deliver for its people a better standard of life, a peaceful life with little fear. The two options I see are:
- To contain the Muslim Brotherhood, the Salafists and the likes as you would contain a nuclear reactor, to keep their version of radiation from getting out, or
- To administer a patriotism test, asking and determining if the interests of Egypt and their own identically match; and if not provide the necessary and adequate assistance to escort them out of the country.

Fortunately for Egypt, Morsi bears no relation to smartness.
