U.N. Torture Committee Questions Holy See

The Vatican sought to defend itself as it came under questioning by a United Nations panel Monday over whether it violated an international treaty against torture in its handling of a clerical sex-abuse scandal.

The hearing was the second U.N. committee appearance by Holy See representatives this year after a children's rights panel in January also called the Vatican to account for its response to allegations around the world of child sexual abuse by clergy. The U.N. Committee Against Torture heard Vatican officials in Geneva in the first of two days of hearings Monday as part of its monitoring of an anti-torture treaty that the Holy See signed on to in 2002.

Voicing regret over past abuses, Vatican officials argued Monday that overhauls implemented by the Roman Catholic Church in response to the scandal in recent years have led to a drop in cases of clerical abuse of minors. They also reiterated that the Holy See's jurisdiction in applying treaties extends only to the Vatican City State, which with fewer than 900 inhabitants in the heart of Rome is the world's smallest country.

Roman Catholic Womenpriests (RCWP) is an international movement within the Roman Catholic Church. The mission of Roman Catholic Womenpriests-USA is to prepare, ordain in Apostolic Succession, and support primarily women who are called by the Holy Spirit and their communities to a renewed priestly ministry rooted in justice and faithfulness to the Gospel.
